Paigow Poker - Strategy

Pai-Gow poker strategy is usually based around the opportunity to be the banker, since you have a statistically better chance of winning while being the banker.

The bank rotates in Pai Gow, so with a full table, you will have the option of being back every seven hands.

Being the bank is not for the cautious, as you may have to pay out to all winners, but it is the only way to make any real money out of this game. If you get a good hand and win, you will get the whole pot, less the 5% commission that the casino gets.

Therefore your main aim in Pai Gow Poker should be to be the banker as much as you can be. Also, when you are the banker, you should bet more than you usually do while you're not the banker, since you will be playing an advantage.

Following this, the next most important thing to be aware of is the way in which you split up your cards. Imitating the way the house splits their cards is a sensible strategy, since the casinos rarely school their croupiers in anything other than the most profitable strategy.

When splitting your cards, remember that you need to win both hands to get a payout. Four aces may be great, but if they come at the price of a certain losing hand on the low cards, then you shouldn’t arrange your cards in that way.

That said, if you have to choose between either making two average to weak hands or one strong hand and one sure loser, it is often better go for one strong hand and hope for a push rather than risk losing your bet with two average hands.
